OVER TO YOU
The architect's mindset
How a marketing ecosystem thinks to design and enable growth.
Resources to accompany chapter 3 of Make Marketing Matter: Change perceptions. Drive performance. Architect growth.

Chapter snapshot
Architecting growth isn't a rebrand. You can't announce a new title for marketing and expect perceptions to change. Having the remit is one thing; being seen as the designer and enabler of growth is another. One is performative, the other is earned.
Chapter 3 explores the energy shift required and how the ecosystem's signature style is built from how it behaves, makes decisions and contributes. It's a chain reaction: mindset shapes decisions, decisions become actions, actions form patterns of behaviour, and behaviour shapes how marketing is perceived.
That signature style rests on five mindset drivers: curiosity, growth focus, strategic intent, purposefulness and connection. Each feels familiar to brilliant marketing leaders. Their power lies in applying them beyond marketing execution and into the broader business.
Definitions in this chapter
signature style enabler.
To deliberately establish marketing that designs and enables the conditions, connections and capabilities that drive performance and growth.
curiosity mindset driver.
An understanding that we don’t yet have the full picture. And that’s ok, we can always find out more.
growth focus mindset driver.
A commitment to continual improvement to enable growth for yourself, others and the business.
strategic intent mindset driver.
Knowing that outcomes are shaped by patterns and context. Using that holistic view to guide decisions.
purposefulness mindset driver.
A belief that what we do should be intentional and meaningful. Seeking to define the ‘why’ in everything.
connection mindset driver.
A desire to collaborate, resonate and build trust. Recognising that progress happens through shared understanding.
Check In
Take a moment to reflect on how marketing shows up in your business today.
- How is marketing currently positioned: as a communicator of messages, an executor of marketing plans, or a contributor to broader business strategy?
- When priorities compete or pressure increases, what most often guides marketing decisions: clarity of purpose, established process, or urgency to deliver?
- When marketing success is measured, what leads the conversation: audience attention linked to business outcomes and growth, or campaign performance against marketing objectives?
Take Action
Shape a signature style. Work through the five mindset drivers and ask one question of each:
- Curiosity: When faced with ambiguity, does marketing default to answers or to asking better questions?
- Growth focus: When marketing falls short, does the response lean toward justification or insight?
- Strategic intent: Is marketing invited to shape leadership thinking, or to support execution?
- Purposefulness: When new requests arrive, does marketing pause to explore the underlying why before responding?
- Connection: Do colleagues outside marketing understand how its work enables their outcomes?
Rate each driver as a strength, a work in progress or a gap. Pick the one that's holding marketing back most, and focus there first. Mindset translates into actions, actions into behaviours, and behaviours into perceptions.
Bring it to the room
How marketing is perceived is decided by everyone around the table, not just marketing.
Ask each leader to answer the same question independently: is marketing a communicator of messages, an executor of plans, or a contributor to strategy? Then ask how often they seek marketing's insight on markets, competitors and customers, and what would make them seek it more.
Compare the answers with marketing's own view. Where they differ is where the signature style isn't yet landing, and where the conversation about what the business needs from marketing can begin.
