OVER TO YOU
The toolkit for growth
The tools to guide design, enable execution and demonstrate impact.
Resources to accompany chapter 4 of Make Marketing Matter: Change perceptions. Drive performance. Architect growth.

Chapter snapshot
Adopting an ecosystem approach shouldn't add to marketing's workload. The foundations for growth are already grounded in marketing excellence. What changes is how that excellence plays out and how the rest of the business sees it.
Chapter 4 introduces the ecosystem toolkit: the five principles that give the ecosystem its disciplines, the enablers that shape how it shows up, the tools that make the work executable, the measures that make impact visible and the practices that make it consistent.
Two tools put the principles to work. Define, Deliver, Demonstrate moves each principle from understanding to action to visible impact. Flipping ROI on its head replaces return on investment with IOR: Impact that leads to Outcomes, Outcomes that lead to Revenue.

Check In
Take a moment to reflect on how marketing's effectiveness is judged in your business today.
- When "what's the ROI?" is asked of a marketing investment, does the answer account for purpose and timeframe, or rely on a single calculation of input versus output?
- Does marketing reporting show the link between audience impact and the outcomes others own, or does it simply repeat marketing metrics?
- Where is the biggest leap between what marketing knows and what the rest of the business understands?
Take Action
Flip ROI on its head for one marketing activity. Pick something current, such as a campaign, a piece of content or an event, and trace it through IOR:
- Impact: What audience behaviour and engagement does it create? What measures tell you it's working?
- Outcomes: How do those interactions lead to enquiries, deal velocity, retention or satisfaction? What timeframe should you expect before they turn into tangible business activity?
- Revenue: How do those outcomes contribute to sales, customers staying and spending more, or more profitable delivery?
Write the chain in plain language.
Bring it to the room
IOR only works if the people who own the outcomes help shape it. Take the chain you've built to the leaders it touches.
Ask each one to challenge the link between marketing's impact and their outcomes. Does it reflect what they see? What would they expect to change, and by when? Agree the timeframes together, and the handful of measures that would show progress along the way.
Then use it the next time "what's the ROI?" comes up. You'll have a shared answer that shows the chain of contribution, not a single number.
